I feel like they should have their own spot in our garage but we build so much out there that it might actually be even dirtier and dustier if we take them out there.Select squat, small cabinets of solid wood with sliding doors to store books, projectors and blankets for family movie nights in your living room or den. I mean…even I have that issue…where to hang the brooms and the vacuum! Where do you guys put yours? In a coat closet? In the garage? In the laundry room? We have our vacuum in our laundry room (eyesore) and then the Swiffers are in our pantry (gross). But otherwise…it’s a great little solution to a very common problem. ![]() They are like wood cousins on a playground.Īnd that’s it! I wish I had gotten a shot of the inside so if I ever go back and get that – I’ll update this post to show the hooks. The hood is within viewing and they both have the same finish and I think it ties everything together. I attached cup hooks on the inside for the brooms to hang and now Charity can hide all her cleaning stuff! Then Jeremy used 2″ long screws to go directly through the back and through the drywall into the studs. The plan was for this to be wall mounted and so we had to bring it inside and determine where the studs were at. Step back once in a while to make sure that you didn’t miss areas.Īttach that dark hardware for contrast and BOOM….you are almost done □ But you will want to hit the edges and the face fairly uniformly. My shoulder now looks like I use steroids because it is a WORKOUT. I used 220 sandpaper and just went at it. It doesn’t need to be completely coated because this is a distress finish.Īfter your paint is dry, you will want to sand the entire thing by hand. Then use a brush to do an imperfect coat of semi-gloss or eggshell interior paint in white. The latex gloves are a waste of time and a waste of a good manicure. Time to finish this baby! I used Rust-Oleum’s American Walnut for the base. Then I had attached the trim on the doors with glue and a brad nailer. I’ll be honest….I don’t build a lot of things with doors….hinges are a little intimidating for some reason…but these are easy. I used four of these hinges for the doors. Once your main box is built, you can attach your doors and your stop blocks. If you are allergic to nuts, just have them handy while you finish your broom closet and then mail them to… Peanut M&Ms are absolutely necessary for this build. Or when the kids ask you….tell them its a coffin □ Okay…so the first thing you do is construct your box. Since you don’t see the insides of the door panels, it wouldn’t have mattered to see that plywood edge either. It wouldn’t have affected the functionality of the closet. In actuality, I used 1×12’s for the doors but I wouldn’t recommend that as it is cheaper to just use plywood for the doors and it would have been nicer if it was just a inch or so wider. I modified the cut list above to show what I should have done.

![]() Description Ī skip graph is a distributed data structure based on skip lists designed to resemble a balanced search tree. ![]() In addition, constructing, inserting, searching, and repairing a skip graph that was disturbed by failing nodes can be done by straightforward algorithms. In contrast to skip lists and other tree data structures, they are very resilient and can tolerate a large fraction of node failures. As they provide the ability to query by key ordering, they improve over search tools based on the hash table functionality only. Skip graphs are mostly used in searching peer-to-peer networks. Skip graphs have the full functionality of a balanced tree in a distributed system. They were invented in 2003 by James Aspnes and Gauri Shah.Ī nearly identical data structure called SkipNet was independently invented by Nicholas Harvey, Michael Jones, Stefan Saroiu, Marvin Theimer and Alec Wolman, also in 2003. Programmable quantum systems based on Rydberg atom arrays have recently been used for hardware-efficient tests of quantum optimization algorithms with hundreds of qubits.Skip graphs are a kind of distributed data structure based on skip lists. In particular, the maximum independent set problem on so-called unit-disk graphs, was shown to be efficiently encodable in such a quantum system. Here, we extend the classes of problems that can be efficiently encoded in Rydberg arrays by constructing explicit mappings from a wide class of problems to maximum-weighted independent set problems on unit-disk graphs, with at most a quadratic overhead in the number of qubits. We analyze several examples, including maximum-weighted independent set on graphs with arbitrary connectivity, quadratic unconstrained binary optimization problems with arbitrary or restricted connectivity, and integer factorization. Numerical simulations on small system sizes indicate that the adiabatic time scale for solving the mapped problems is strongly correlated with that of the original problems. Our work provides a blueprint for using Rydberg atom arrays to solve a wide range of combinatorial optimization problems with arbitrary connectivity, beyond the restrictions imposed by the hardware geometry. Programmable quantum systems offer unique possibilities to test the performance of various quantum optimization algorithms. Some of the main practical limitations in this context are often set by specific hardware restrictions. In particular, the native connectivity of the qubits for a given platform typically restricts the class of problems that can addressed. For instance, Rydberg atom arrays naturally allow encoding maximum independent set problems, but native encodings are restricted to so-called unit disk graphs. In this work we significantly expand the class of problems that can be addressed with Rydberg atom arrays, overcoming the limitations to geometric graphs. We develop a specific encoding scheme to map a variety of problems into arrangements of Rydberg atoms, including maximum weighted independent sets on graphs with arbitrary connectivity, quadratic unconstrained binary optimization problems with arbitrary or restricted connectivity, and integer factorization. Our work thus provides a blueprint for using Rydberg atom arrays to solve a wide range of combinatorial optimization problems, using technology already available in experiments. The weight of the vertices is indicated by its interior color on a gray scale. For each example, the degenerate MWIS configurations are shown by identifying vertices in a MWIS with a red boundary. The MWISs correspond to the satisfying assignments to the corresponding constraint-satisfaction problem. The value of such merciless satire is that it says "Bah!" to the kitsching of America, and to Hollywood and mass consumer culture in general. It's perfect, somehow, that David Lynch should be the film's producer, because his "Eraserhead" is the only other film to capture that same sense of domestic claustrophobia and dread. During these powerful, harrowing scenes, Zwigoff presents a picture of family as common affliction. The movie returns to Charles a number of times, and in each encounter he seems worse, more spectral, less in this world. (The artist's two sisters refused to participate in the film project.) Actually, compared to Charles and Max, the youngest brother-who begs on street corners and meditates on a bed of nails-Robert comes across as verging on normal. Charles comes off as profoundly disturbed, and his own sense of psychic distress was so great that he infected his younger siblings with it. As boys, they created their own world up in their room Dad was physically and emotionally abusive and Mom was a speed freak. It was Charles who first turned Robert on to comic books-not just reading them, making them. There, sitting on the bed in his room, unshaven, unwashed and with a mouthful of rotting teeth, is Charles, who ventured into the world only briefly, failed, then returned home never to set foot outside again. One look at his family in Philadelphia and you see why. His medium is self-loathing and disgust: for the pretty cheerleaders and jocks who laughed at him in the hallways and rejected him for the empty, plastic, fast-food, anything-for-a-buck American culture. ![]() Nothing for Crumb is free, not love, not sex, certainly not family. But Crumb-who favors straw boaters and canes and wears a look of perpetual nausea-couldn't have been less of a hippie. The German George Grosz is an apt comparison, though Hieronymus Bosch is a better one, especially after Crumb began taking LSD and his cartoons erupted with psychedelic images and stoned conceptualism.īecause he was based in San Francisco and did an album cover for Janis Joplin, Crumb was immediately embraced by the counterculture. To validate his claims he brings eminent art critic Robert Hughes onscreen to declare Crumb a "modern Brueghel." Actually, Hughes seems to have dozed off on this one, unless he sees Crumb's masturbatory obsessions and aggression as mere lusty fun. Though Zwigoff trots out a couple of experts to discuss whether Crumb has "gone too far" with some of this, it's much more important to him that the audience recognize Crumb as a significant artist and not merely an underground cult phenom. ![]() Black women are stereotyped as slutty Aunt Jemimas, such as the monster-thighed Angelfood McSpade. In one late cartoon, the author goes so far as to show himself "involved," so to speak, with a headless torso-a fantasy that, he says, freaked out even him. Women are defiled, objectified and mutilated. In Crumb's art, the id runs amok, smashing pieties and throwing down the gauntlet at the feet of political correctness. ![]() His drawings are a deliberate affront to good taste that is their purpose. ![]() As a result, Crumb has something to offend just about everyone. The work itself is brutally-even cruelly-cynical about human desires and motives. And you watch him draw, working his bony, scarecrow fingers in sharp, birdlike movements, translating onto the page what he sees through the dark filter of his satire. Organizing his affairs prior to departure, Crumb sorts though old boxes at his San Francisco house, comments on his career, gossips with old girlfriends and ex-wives, and pays farewell visits to his brothers Max and Charles, back home with Mom in Philadelphia.Īll the while, you can hear the rage and self-pity and pain in his snide, adenoidal whine as he denounces the American dream as a rip-off and a lie. Wing, the elderly Chinese guardian of Gizmo, when he was child in 1920s Shanghai and first encountered the Mogwai and their dark progeny, the Gremlins. JOE DANTE:I was at the Annecy Film Festival for the premiere of Gremlins : Secrets of the Mogwai (2022), an HBO Max animated series that functions as a prequel to Gremlins, following the adventures of Mr. GABE KLINGER:You were traveling recently. It’s Elizabeth’s son’s child, he says, so he can’t fully claim the title. He tells me he’s a grandfather-well, sort of. Joe spoke to me via Zoom from his dining room in Los Angeles, where his partner and producer Elizabeth Stanley lurked around behind him. The circulation of StudioCanal’s new 4K DCP restoration-color timed by Dante himself-presents the best opportunity to discover The Howling since its original release. Where do you go from there? Looking at The Howling, which directly precedes the filmmaker’s embattled Hollywood period, it appears as the work of an upstart whose ambitions hadn’t yet met a ceiling (or studio writer’s room, as it were), working through genre film problems with the savvy of a true film connoisseur, and elevating a would-be grindhouse item by virtue of curating worthy collaborators-among these, John Sayles, who rewrote the film’s mediocre script Pino Donaggio, who composed its roaring, evocative themes and cinematographer John Hora, who designed its gloriously saturated images. As an outsider masquerading as an insider, Joe’s confidence was chiseled away by a series of demoralizing incidents, such as losing final cut to production partners Burger King-yes, Burger King-on 1998’s Small Soldiers. The shifting power ranks of the studios never sought to empower him in the same way as contemporaries Ron Howard, Tim Burton, Robert Zemeckis, or indeed Spielberg, who frequently alternate between blockbuster and prestige cinema. In the introduction to our book, we touched on Jonathan Rosenbaum’s idea of Dante as a “post-cult” director whose career self-effacement can be partly attributed to an engagement with cinematic traditions that have been derisively viewed as lowbrow. That last film, Joe’s so-far final effort for a major studio, was a necessary corrective to Joe Pytka’s abysmal Space Jam (1995), and symbolized, among other things, the eager matinee attendee from suburban Newark’s disillusionment with the industry that had once left him starry-eyed. The latter’s unexpected box-office success led to nearly two decades of unceasing mainstream activity, from Explorers (1985) to Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003). Having sharpened his monster movie teeth with Roger Corman on Piranha (1978), Dante graduated to making The Howling (1981) under the quasi-exploitation AVCO Embassy banner, and then almost immediately landed the Spielberg-produced Gremlins (1984) for Warner Bros. Sadly-though somewhat expectedly given the uncharitable response to the film-many concurrent and subsequent auteur projects Joe has tried to push through the gates have mostly been gathering layers of dust (we touch on a couple of these in our conversation below).ĭante’s half-century-long relationship with Hollywood and its contours is a rich and frustrating one. There was just enough from the Danteverse to remind one of better times. Joe’s reaction to this was akin to that of an enthusiastic camp counselor: “Oooh, scary!”īurying the Ex didn’t end up one of Joe’s finest-I attribute that to an inadequate budget and a middling script-but there were a handful of graceful touches familiar to any Dante fan: the peculiar tone of mournful comedy and nostalgia references to cartoons and B-movies (Ed Wood’s 1957 Plan 9 from Outer Space makes an appearance) and a walk-on by actor Dick Miller (R.I.P.), who had appeared in all of Dante’s features dating back to his very first. Once, actress Alexandra Daddario contorted her face and stuck out her tongue at the end of a set of placid close-ups. Observing him, there was no ostentation, no extra comfort outside of a director’s chair that he rarely sat in, no effort to make it known he was the boss. I positioned myself by the director’s monitor for three consecutive days, something that irked producers but not the easy-going Dante. “It’s the only problem I have with the book,” he told me, “I pretty much have to keep it to myself.”Īround the same period, Joe graciously let me visit the Los Angeles set of Burying the Ex (2014), his last feature film to date. When it arrived stateside, Joe’s modesty prevented him from sending the book to family and friends. Believe it or not, the 254-page volume I co-edited on Joe Dante, jointly published by the Austrian Film Museum and Slovenian Cinematheque in 2013, remains the only comprehensive critical appraisal of the veteran filmmaker available in English. ![]() Original broadcast aired by Westwood One/WNEW FM.īand Support: Collen Combs, Shannon Bilotti,Ĭlair Bros.
